Reading were on top for the first 20 minutes without creating any clear cut chances. Stoke eventually got themselves into the game and took the lead when Adam Federici spilt a miss-hit shot from Michael Kightly. Reading let their nerves get the better of them and Stoke almost doubled the lead with Jonathan Walters near  post header going just wide.

The second half began with Stoke unsurprisingly on the front foot however unable to double their lead. The introduction of new signing Garath McCleary got the royals going with his speed and trickery causing problems for the Stoke defence. After with standing a heavy storm of Reading pressure, Stoke were on edge and as McCleary ran through the defence he was blatantly brought down by Stoke midfielder Dean Whitehead, after already being booked he received his marching orders. Adam Le Fondre produced an ice cool finish to give the royals a deserved equaliser. Ian Harte came close to grabbing all 3 points for Reading however hit his free-kick agonizingly over the bar.

It finished 1-1 with both teams deserving the point and McDermott can only be encouraged by what he saw in the last 20 minutes of the game.
