Our Journey Continues...
Southampton are back in the top
flight and it couldn’t get much harder for the New Boys. The Saints start their campaign away from
home against reigning Champions Manchester City. Not only is that an uphill
task to beat the Champions on their home turf but Nigel Adkins men then face
Manchester United and Arsenal back to back after they introduce their fans to the
Premier League at St Marys against Wigan. Playing 3 of the Premier League’s biggest teams in the opening weeks, means in some respects that Southampton’s season could be over before it has
even started.
Many Southampton fans have moaned
and groaned about the fact that Saints have only brought in 4 players since the
transfer market has opened. Nigel Adkins must see that a new centre back is on
the agenda with the New Boys only having 3 senior centre half’s in the squad.
Not only that but one of those is Daniel Seaborne whom of which is expected to
depart from St Marys fairly soon. That out of the way many fans still believe
that the squad needs to be stronger if it is to cope with the likes of Eden
Hazard, Shinji Kagawa and Sergio Aguero. Briefly looking into who Southampton
have signed, Jay Rodriguez shows a lot of promise as the young English striker
has an abundance of pace and his work-rate is sublime on and off the ball.
However, there is a lot on the young boys’ shoulders as he was bought for £7
million, smashing Southampton’s record. The 2nd signing was Former
Rangers Captain Steve Davis. I feel this is a great signing as Steve’s experience
of playing in the Premier League can certainly help younger players within the
squad. Our 3rd signing was Paulo Gazzaniga. Paulo was a product of
Valencia’s academy and the 6ft 5 keeper has potential to be something special.
However, I do not know a lot about him just like the majority of other fans so
whether or not he will succeed at Southampton remains an un-answered question.
Finally, our only other signing up to date is young full back Nathaniel Clyne.
This is the signing I was hoping for as Clyne is an attacking minded full back
with bundles of pace. His defensive side of his game is just as good and it is
nice to know that Southampton beat off the likes of Manchester United for the
signature of the England U21 international.
Southampton are back where they
belong and I feel with one or two more additions they could certainly produce a
unexpected high finish of at least 12th. Over the last couple of
years it is clear to every Saints fan that there Is a lot of ambition down on
the south coast now and if we do secure a place in the Premier League for next
season then I feel us Saints fan could be in for a few surprises with the
Chairman already making it clear that he wants Southampton to be among the
world’s elite teams one day.
